New Bill in Congress would Reestablish National Seafood Council

On September 29th, Senators Roger Wicker (R-MS) and Ben Cardin (D-MD) introduced the National Seafood Marketing Act of 2022. The bill would reestablish the National Seafood Council, which would administer a national seafood marketing campaign that promotes the public health benefits and sustainability of all seafood.

The original Council, active from 1987 to 1991, was established to support commercial fishing industry and increase Americans' seafood consumption. In light of the COVID pandemic and its impact of the seafood industry, and the myriad public health challenges that the country is facing, many are calling for new promotional campaigns to educate consumers on the importance of seafood nutrition.

Next, the bill next heads to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation for a vote.
